GMISTS is proud to partner with GR Makers

GR Makers is an open community lab incorporating elements of a machine shop, a workshop, and a design studio. Located in a 8,500 square-foot space hear downtown Grand Rapids, our members work on projects that range from the industrial to the delicate arts. Together, we are building a community focused on three key goals: enabling personal expression, providing education for all ages, and supporting entrepreneurship.

Do you love video games and wish you could make your own? Game design teaches math, art, logic, writing, and computer skills in the most exciting way imaginable! Girls will be introduced to several free video game making programs that allow you to create, share, and sell games for computer, mobile device, Xbox, and PlayStation. While we will touch on major video game design systems, this class will only cover the basics and provide a foundation for anyone that wants to go further in video game development. Anyone can learn how to make video games in this class even if you have never written code in your life. Girl Scouts will explore different free programs, make a simple video game, and be able to build more after the class has ended.

Anyone can build and control a robot in this exciting robotics class! Think you have what it takes to build the ultimate robot? Girl Scouts will be given some guidance and instruction to build a Lego robot and battle other teams in our battle arena. Instructions for a basic structure will be provided, but girls will be able to modify, strengthen, and add any sort of attachments desired. Girls will be using EV3 robotics, which are strong and easy to build with. We will explain coding and sensors, but all of the input commands for your robots will be given with an IR remote and beacon or Bluetooth device. All scouts will learn some basic engineering skills and get the chance to battle other participants. The robots will have to stay at GR Makers, but we will provide a buyers guide for anyone interested in building robots at home.
