Event Description

Learn and practice small craft safety! This training permits GS volunteers to facilitate canoeing and kayaking with their Girl Scouts.
The course is open to a maximum of 8 adult volunteers. The in-person skills assessment is facilitated by 1 instructor and supported by a supervising lifeguard.

Please note, this is a HYBRID training. Completion of this course involves:
1. Completing gsLearn video modules (Approximately 30 min in length)
2. Passing online exam prior to in-person training (80% or higher) (approximately 30 minutes total test time)
3. Successfully completing the in-person training and skills assessment with GSMISTS on June 15, 2024.

Participants must demonstrate:
* Swimming ability
* Shore based rescues
* On-water rescues
* Self-rescues
* Supported rescues for other boaters

Completing GSMISTS Small Craft Safety permits Girl Scout volunteers to:
* Facilitate Girl Scout canoeing and kayaking near shore, on flat, no current bodies of water and within the parameters set by Safety Activity Checkpoints.

This training is valid for 2 years after completion.

What this training is NOT:
This is NOT a certification course. Completing this training permits only GSMISTS volunteers to facilitate canoeing/kayaking for GSMISTS Girl Scouts. This is NOT a moving water or advanced paddling course. Paddling techniques will not be covered - this is not a skill building course.


Participant Information

A portion of this event/training takes place online. Please make sure to take the Girl Scout Internet Safety Pledge before you start. High-Speed internet is required. You can join from your computer, tablet, or smartphone. You will receive more information about access event in the confirmation.

Supplies
Supplies will be provided at the event. 

Registration, Cancellation, Refund, Transfer Info
Troops are encouraged to register for this event together through the Troop Leader's MYGS account. This will help to ensure troop participates together. 
Girl Scouts not registering as a troop or who are attending individually should register for this event through their parent/guardian's MYGS account.
Event confirmation/information such as zoom links are e-mailed days prior to the event.

Events are first come first serve and are open until the registration deadline or the event fills. GSMISTS is unable to maintain waiting lists.
If the event is cancelled by GSMISTS a 100% refund will be issued. 

REGISTRATION END DATE: June 2, 2024 - strict registration deadline. No registrations will be accepted after this date.

Event registrations are non-refundable. In the event a girl/adult can no longer attend the program, spaces may be swapped to another attendee. Contact customercare@gsmists.org.
