Event Description

Join GSMISTS for a Girl Scout edition of Sharing the Spirit of America!

This statewide movement developed by America250MI, is the chance for all of Michigan to lift its voice-together-in a synchronized reading of the Declaration of Independence. This isn't a reenactment; it's a renewal.

The Declaration's words-"all men are created equal"-were proclaimed by a small circle of wealthy, well educated men in powdered wigs, many of whom denied those very rights to others.
And yet those words sparked Unfinished Revolutions: abolishing slavery; restoring and lifting Indigenous voices; expanding the vote; welcoming immigrants; empowering civil rights and labor movements; sending girls to school-then into laboratories-legislatures-and low Earth orbit. The arc is imperfect-and still bending-because ordinary people keep showing up to make the text true.

On July 8, we gather not only to read these words, but to live them-locally, lawfully, and together! We invite Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors to speak up and read aloud sections to the group. We'll have copies of the Declaration of Independence available in 12 different languages, too -

Girl Scouts can work toward the America250MI patch, citizen badges, or democracy badges before or after of our 6:00PM reading.
Enjoy activity stations to quiz your knowledge of Michigan history before and after the American Revolution, play in the past by learning old school games, and making a colonial era fidget spinner!
